Department Statement

At Cal State East Bay, you will join an active community of scholars dedicated to redefining the way history is imagined, investigated, and presented. Our History majors enjoy small classes, individualized advising, and dedicated faculty support in completing their BA and MA degrees. Your professors are published experts whose teaching and research spans centuries and continents. We offer a wide variety of community-building activities for our students both online and in person, from a student-published journal to an honors society. We also center career and graduate school preparation in our degree programs.

The Master of Arts degree in History is a flexible advanced degree program supporting students with varied interests and academic backgrounds. Our MA degree courses introduce you to advanced skills in historical research and provide opportunities for training in teaching and public history. We deepen students’ knowledge of a wide range of subjects, through the unique expertise of our History Department faculty. If you wish to study the past in order to change our present, or just love studying the past for its own sake, we invite you to apply to our programs for either Fall or Spring semesters.
