BIOL 446 - Pathogenic Microbiology Units: 3 Molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of microorganisms in mammalian hosts, including regulation of common and pathogen-specific virulence determinants, modulation of host processes and immune evasion processes.
Prerequisites: BIOL 330. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Relate basic concepts of medical microbiology to molecular mechanisms of infectious diseases in humans;
- Identify and discuss fundamental similarity and divergences in the molecular mechanisms of microbial pathogenic processes;
- Apply concepts of microbial evolution, gene regulation, and resistance development to the microbes’ ability to survive and/or cause disease in the host;
- Synthesize, integrate and effectively communicate scientific information both in writing and orally;
- Assess the past and potential future social implications of microbial pathogenesis research.
