BIOL 474 - Biomedical Physiology Units: 3 Physiological processes and interactions at the molecular, cellular, and organ levels involved in human pathology. Provides a foundation for understanding the etiology, recognition, and treatment of diseases and the mechanisms of drugs.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: CHEM 340. Prerequisites: BIOL 370; or BIOL 270 and BIOL 271. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Distinguish between normal and abnormal physiological processes, from the cell/molecular to organ levels, that explain the development of disease;
- Describe the clinical manifestations of and treatments for certain human diseases, and the mechanisms by which certain drugs act;
- Interpret, evaluate, and apply physiological data, graphical displays of information (e.g., graphs, tables, concept diagrams), and mathematical expressions in order to explain phenomena in biomedical physiology;
- Work collaboratively and cooperatively in small groups to solve real-life clinical problems using case studies and to integrate information from biomedical physiology with that from other disciplines (e.g., biochemistry, chemistry, physics);
- Clearly and effectively communicate explanations/arguments in a variety of formats (e.g., visual/oral presentations, writing assignments, essay questions).
