PH 270 - Investigating Disease Outbreaks and Epidemics


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-C2; Social Justice
The social, cultural and historical impact of epidemics from a humanities perspective. Applications of epidemiology to public health practice and our society. Study of the ethical and social context of epidemiology, through great works of literature and selected historical narratives.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Critically evaluate the role and relevance of epidemiology as a tool to address public health problems.
  2. Understand the historical and social context of epidemiology through literature and film.
  3. Classify the most commonly used epidemiologic study designs through conceptual and narrative perspectives.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of how basic epidemiological calculations describe a public health problem.
  5. Critique the ethical issues surrounding epidemiology practice.

  1. Show appreciation for the humanities using their intellect, imagination, sensibility, and sensitivity;
  2. develop their affective and cognitive faculties through studying great works reflecting the rich diversity of human imagination and/or inquiry; and
  3. engage in critical self-reflection relating themes in the humanities to the students’ own lives.
