An overview of the diverse regions, environments and peoples of contemporary Africa and the changing patterns of resource utilization and human development.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements; and GEOG 125.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Identify and contrast various sub-regions within the African continent, north and south of the Sahara, on various criteria - cultural, historical, environmental, etc.
Locate and identify the various countries, major cities, and important environmental features across the continent.
Describe key attributes of selected African nations and their citizens with respect to wealth, poverty, language, religion, demographics, and so forth.
Identify and explain the colonial influences in Africa and the historical relationships to current nation states.
Articulate and evaluate commonly-held perceptions and stereotypes of Africa with respect to a variety of social, political and economic factors.
Identify and explain contemporary social, political, economic and environmental issues facing Africa and their historical and geographic underpinnings.
Discuss the human and physical geography of the African continent and describe and explain one or more key environmental, economic or social issues and their causes in detail
