ENGL 660 - Introduction to Composition Studies Theory and Methods


Units: 4
Introduction to the field of Composition Studies and its contribution to theories and methods of teaching writing.

Prerequisites: Post-baccalaureate standing.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Read scholarship in the field of Composition Studies with an awareness of intersections between research, theory, and practice.
  2. Identify historical, social, political, and economic underpinnings of various approaches to teaching composition.
  3. Recognize essential aspects of writing instruction, including rhetorical awareness, linguistic knowledge, and critical thinking.
  4. Use theoretical knowledge to evaluate and develop instructional materials for diverse learners.
  5. Understand the role of Composition Studies in promoting equity and social justice.
