Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Compare and contrast various microorganisms with regard to individual characteristics that foster an understanding of their life cycles, interactions with humans, and ecology;
- Identify and characterize the major components of microbial metabolism and describe their relationship to bacterial survival and evolution;
- Describe basic genetic principles of prokaryotes including methods of gene expression and gene transfer;
- Identify the main components of the human immune response and relate that to their role in maintaining host health;
- Identify the role of microorganisms in past scientific discoveries and describe their contributions to other scientific disciplines;
- Describe and perform common microbiology laboratory procedures and the mechanisms by which they function;
- Demonstrate competency of microbiology procedures, interpretation of their results, and application of their function;
- Maintain an accurate laboratory notebook in which experimental results and interpretations are recorded.

- Demonstrate knowledge of scientific theories, concepts, and data about the life sciences;
- demonstrate an understanding of scientific practices, including the scientific method; and
- describe the potential limits of scientific endeavors, including the accepted standards and ethics associated with scientific inquiry.
