HDEV 411 - Early Childhood Cognitive Development: Theory and Research


Units: 4
Theories, methods, and research findings in early childhood cognitive development from the prenatal stage to age five.  Biological and genetic foundations of cognition, perception, mental representation, problem solving, reasoning, memory, metacognition, and social cognition.

Prerequisites: Junior, senior or post-baccalaureate standing.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Describe and discuss the major domains of the human cognitive system and the milestones of early childhood (from birth through age 5) cognitive development in each major domain.

2. Describe and discuss major theoretical frameworks and research methods used in research on early childhood cognitive development. 

3. Apply early childhood cognitive development concepts to examples of early childhood observations, and critically examine their academic and practical application.
