ES 222 - Race in the City Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-F-ES, Social Justice This course explores structural forces and institutional practices that shape racial and class inequalities in U.S. cities. We investigate various urban and suburban cases to understand how communities of color demonstrate resilience and resistance across time.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Identify key historical events that excluded communities of color from accessing opportunities that would lead to social mobility and wealth accumulation.
- Analyze how race manifests differently in urban, suburban, and rural contexts within the U.S.
- Explain how marginalized populations form communities and resist exclusion, displacement, and systemic racism.
Social Justice Overlay Learning Outcomes
- use a disciplinary perspective to analyze issues of social justice and equity;
- describe the challenges to achieving social justice; and
- identify ways in which individuals and/or groups can contribute to social justice within local communities, nations, or the world.
