MUS 623 - Seminar in African Music and Culture


Units: 3
Music and culture of selected parts of Africa and the African diaspora. Issues of identity, politics, modernization, and globalization will be studied from an ethnomusicological perspective.

Prerequisites: M.A. Music major.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply the principles, methodologies, and thought processes employed in the study of music in Africa and the African diaspora.
  2. Differentiate between a variety of African musical forms and styles, from folk to popular.
  3. Analyze the performance of music in Africa and the diaspora as an expression of, or reflection upon, the unique historical and cultural context in which it is created, consumed, and valued.
  4. Demonstrate how the music of Africa and the diaspora are used by informed, engaged, and reflective citizens to benefit local and global communities.
