HIST 471 - History of the East Bay: Community Research and Engagement

Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D
A research-based course designed to bring students into the local Bay Area community to conduct research, investigate community stories and understand the link between history and community identity.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid Only.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Identify a historical site or community in the Bay Area to research;

2. Complete at least one site visit, to document and evaluate community

context for the historic site;

3. Prepare a research prospectus for the historic site or community;

4. Use digital media or other exhibition media to present primary source

evidence gathered about the historic site or community;

5. Develop a sense of the unique history of the Bay Area within the

context of state, national and global history, and as a reflection of

national and global trends;

6. Investigate public history as a career field, according to standards

provided by the National Council on Public History;

7. Discuss the Certificate in Public History at Cal State East Bay.
