ENSC 241 - Environmental Biology Laboratory


Units: 1 ; Breadth Area: GE-B3
Introductory investigations of living organisms, focusing on biological processes, biodiversity, how the environment influences organisms, and how organisms in turn influence the environment. Methods of scientific inquiry, experimental design, data analysis, science as a creative process.

Co-requisites: ENSC 240.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Apply knowledge of evolution, biodiversity, the influence of local climate and other environmental factors, and ecology in a variety of contexts, both inside the laboratory and outdoors.
  2. Design and conduct simple experiments, with control and treatment groups, hypotheses, and proper documentation, data collection, and data analysis practices.
  3. Identify common local plants, and explain how each is uniquely adapted to the local environment.
  4. Explain ways in which scientific inquiry is an iterative, creative process, while citing examples from course activities.

  1. Apply their knowledge of scientific theories, concepts, and data about the physical and sciences through laboratory activities;
  2. apply their understanding of scientific practices, including the scientific method in a laboratory setting; and
  3. demonstrate accepted standards and ethics associated with scientific inquiry, while completing laboratory activities.
