BIOL 471 - Neurobiology

The structure and function of the vertebrate and invertebrate nervous system with emphasis on the principles of communication, control, and sensorimotor responses. Survey of concepts of neurochemistry, feedback, bionic models, and higher brain processes.

Prerequisites: BIOL 370.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Describe the physiological principles of how a nervous system works;
Demonstrate how the nervous system controls and coordinates effector organs;
Analyze simple neural circuits such as reflexes to predict their behavioral functions;
Illustrate how the nervous system develops and organizes itself;
Describe the mechanisms by which synaptic plasticity mediates learning and memory.
