BIOL 444 - Medical Entomology

Role of arthropods in the transmission of human pathogens. General anatomy, physiology, and classification of medically important arthropods, as well as the epidemiology and pathogenesis of their associated diseases, and the principles and methods of vector control.

Prerequisites: BIOL 140B.
Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid Only.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Recall the major arthropod‐borne diseases and define their geographic distribution and major features;
  2. Distinguish between specific methods of pathogen transmission by arthropods;
  3. Identify basic characteristics of medically important arthropods and their role in public health;
  4. Demonstrate understanding of and be able to calculate vectorial capacity;
  5. Describe the methods used for the prevention and control of vector‐borne diseases.
