CHEM 233 - Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry

Units: 3
Basic physical and chemical properties of the major classes of organic compounds. Emphasis is placed on those aspects of organic chemistry that are relevant to the study of human and environmental health.

Prerequisites: CHEM 112 with grade C- or better.
Credit Restrictions: Not for Chemistry or Biochemistry major or minor credit.

Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. predict bonding, nomenclature, and the chemical and physical properties of organic compounds when the molecular structure is known;
  2. identify common organic functional groups and demonstrate knowledge of the chemistry and reactivity of each functional group;
  3. explain the common reaction mechanisms of organic reactions;
  4. discuss the importance of organic compounds in living systems as it relates to human and environmental health.
