CHEM 162 - Basic Biochemistry for the Health Sciences

An introduction to basic biochemistry with emphasis on the structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids as they relate to human health.

Prerequisites: CHEM 161 or CHEM 165, both with grade C- or better.
Credit Restrictions: Not for Chemistry or Biochemistry major or minor credit.

Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Recognize and describe the chemical structure and physical properties of the biological macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins;
Describe the relationship between structure and function for carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins;
Demonstrate an understanding of the basic biochemical reactions involved in the synthesis and degradation of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins;
Demonstrate an understanding of the connection between the metabolic reactions of the biological macromolecules and human health.
