MUS 305 - Global Hip-Hop


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C
Rooted in the U.S., hip hop is now a global phenomenon. We explore examples of hip hop music and culture in various points around the world, examining how artists are adapting the art form to respond to their local conditions.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper-division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3, and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely Online.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Apply a range of general and specialized terms relating to the study of music;
  2. Demonstrate an in-depth familiarity with several varieties of hip hop and explain ways in which they relate to the historical, social, political, and economic contexts in which they were created, consumed, and valued;
  3. Explain the relationship between music and culture and of the role music plays in human experience;
  4. Complete a final project that investigates a form of hip hop of their choice and communicate their discoveries through a variety of methods.

  1. demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply the principles, methodologies, value systems, and thought processes employed in the arts and humanities;
