MUS 446 - Vocal Pedagogy


Units: 2
Introduction to professional voice teaching. Examines methods, materials, resources, and techniques for teaching beginning voice students. Students will learn vocal anatomy, observe vocal instruction, and survey beginning and intermediate vocal repertoire.

Prerequisites: MUS 112, MUS 116.
Repeatability: May be repeated for credit for a maximum of 4 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Develop pedagogical skills for teaching the beginning voice student
  2. Evaluate methods and materials available to the voice teacher
  3. Observe and analyze university-level secondary group voice classes
  4. Develop the ability to plan private lessons for peer and instructor feedback
  5. Explore the business aspects of operating an independent vocal studio
  6. Articulate a studio policy and marketing strategy
  7. Evaluate online and print resources relating to professional voice teaching including journals, magazines, books and conferences proceedings
