KIN 315 - Sport, Culture, and Power


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D; Social Justice
Examination of sport as a significant social and cultural institution that impacts and is impacted by the larger society. Analysis of past and contemporary issues and controversies through various sociological frameworks.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Equivalent Quarter Course: KIN 3750.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. The student will be able to explain a sociological perspective.
  2. The student will be able to compare and contrast the tenets of different sociological theoretical positions
  3. The student will be able to demonstrate how different theories explain the cultural and political dynamics of sport.
  4. By applying theory, the student will be able to explain the ways in which sport reinforces dominant social relations, and to explain the ways in which it challenges those relations.

  1. analyze how power and social identity affect social outcomes for different cultural and economic groups using methods of social science inquiry and vocabulary appropriate to those methods;
