In-depth analysis of cell and tissue structure and function using advanced microscopy techniques including confocal. Students will learn optical theory, labeling techniques, sample preparation methods, and digital imaging and video analysis and quantification. Lecture Units: 1; Lab Units: 2.

Prerequisites: BIOL 140A.
Co-requisites: BIOL 601B.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate ability to use advanced microscopes safely and effectively.
  2. Describe the physical basis for microscopic imaging techniques.
  3. Prepare cells and tissue for microscopy.
  4. Interpret, manipulate, quantify, analyze, export images and movies of cells and tissues.
  5. Collect informative images and movies and to use them effectively to illustrate structure and function in figures for publication.
