MLL 443 - Survey Spanish Literature I: Medieval and Golden Age


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C
Survey of Spanish literature from the Middle Ages to 1700. Socio-political, aesthetic, philosophical, and literary ideas studied through readings and major works from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Taught in Spanish, readings in Spanish and English.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Equivalent Quarter Course: MLL 4457.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the Spanish literature from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.
  2. Student will able to read and analyze literary works of different genres of the Spanish Medieval and Golden Age literature (narrative, poetry, and drama) and its connections with the arts, specially painting and architecture.
  3. Student will able to understand the political and cultural context of origins of Spanish literature, especially the impact of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism during Medieval Ages, Renaissance and its resonances in the present time.
