GEOG 352 - Latin America and the Caribbean


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D
The geography of Latin America and the Caribbean and its present-day patterns and processes. A systematic review of physical characteristics, social and political systems and problems, economic issues, cultural variations, and regional integrations and interactions in a globalized society.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements; and GEOG 125.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Equivalent Quarter Course: GEOG 3510 and GEOG 3515.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Identify, compare and contrast the countries, major cities, and important environmental features across Latin America and the Caribbean.
  2. Describe key attributes of the region’s nations and their citizens with respect to wealth, poverty, language, religion, demographics, and so forth.
  3. Identify and explain the colonial influences across Latin America and the Caribbean and the historical relationships to current nation states.
  4. Identify and explain contemporary social, political, economic and environmental issues facing Latin America and the Caribbean and their historical and geographic underpinnings.
  5. Discuss the human and physical geography of Latin America and the Caribbean and describe and explain one or more key environmental, economic or social issues and their causes in detail
