ENGL 204 - Writing About Literature


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-C2
Theory and practice of critical writing based on selected readings of major literary works.

Equivalent Quarter Course: Any two from: ENGL 2030, ENGL 2040, ENGL 2050.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. articulate their own ideas and interpretations about different genres of literature;
  2. explain the elements of fiction, poetry, and drama;
  3. listen carefully to and respect the ideas and interpretations of others;
  4. write clear thesis-driven essays about the different genres of literature, demonstrating analytical and persuasive skills;
  5. revise and improve their writing in both form and content;
  6. Appreciate the origins and development of American films;
  7. Use film terminology to discuss and analyzing a diverse range of American films;
  8. Write critically and clearly about American films;
  9. Connect innovations, themes, portrayals, and stories within American films to the life experience of themselves and/or others.

  1. Show appreciation for the humanities using their intellect, imagination, sensibility, and sensitivity;
  2. develop their affective and cognitive faculties through studying great works reflecting the rich diversity of human imagination and/or inquiry; and
