ENGL 204 - Writing About Literature

Theory and practice of critical writing based on selected readings of major literary works.

Equivalent Quarter Course: Any two from: ENGL 2030, ENGL 2040, ENGL 2050.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

articulate their own ideas and interpretations about different genres of literature;
explain the elements of fiction, poetry, and drama;
listen carefully to and respect the ideas and interpretations of others;
write clear thesis-driven essays about the different genres of literature, demonstrating analytical and persuasive skills;
revise and improve their writing in both form and content;
Appreciate the origins and development of American films;
Use film terminology to discuss and analyzing a diverse range of American films;
Write critically and clearly about American films;
Connect innovations, themes, portrayals, and stories within American films to the life experience of themselves and/or others.

develop their affective and cognitive faculties through studying great works reflecting the rich diversity of human imagination and/or inquiry; and
