SLHS 304 - Introduction to Communication Disorders Units: 3 Comprehensive review of disorders of communication, cognition and swallowing across the lifespan for students in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Topics introduced include disorders of speech, language, cognition and swallowing while introducing basic tenets of professional writing and communication.
Prerequisites: Declared major in B.S. Speech Pathology and Audiology, or admitted graduate student. Equivalent Quarter Course: SPPA 2850. Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid Only. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - State the basic tenets of ASHA’s Code of Ethics; describe the scope of practice of speech language pathology (SLP) and explain the process for becoming licensed and certified as an SLP.
- Identify at least four distinct practice settings (and their unique features) in Speech-Language Pathology.
- Develop a thorough understanding of the Intl Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health.
- List major categories of speech/language/cognitive disorders in adults and children with at least 2 examples of each.
- Gain a working knowledge about an SLP’s role in managing swallowing disorders.
- Demonstrate the ability to read and summarize in writing, short articles from the field of communicative sciences and disorders.
