SLHS 698 - Internship


Units: 4
Field placement in supervised and approved clinical settings such as public schools, hospitals, and community speech-language and hearing clinics and/or programs.  Clinical internships are typically completed in two distinct settings to provide requisite breadth of clinical training, and to meet professional accreditation and licensure/certification standards. 

Prerequisites: Admission to M.S. Speech-Language Pathology program.
Equivalent Quarter Course: SPPA 6066.
Repeatability: Must be repeated twice for credit for a maximum of 8 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: ABC/NC grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Review independently available background information for each client/patient and plan appropriate assessments relative to concerns presented, client/patient age, functional needs and site requirements.
  2. Correctly administer and score all assessment measures (both standardized and non- standardized), with consideration to diversity of language and cultural background of the client/patient.
  3. Accurately analyze and interpret all assessment results, including behavioral observations, with consideration to diversity of language and cultural background of the client, as well as site-specific eligibility criteria.
  4. Formulate appropriate clinical impressions, recommendations, short and long term goals and treatment plans, which comprehensively address the communication and behavioral needs of each client/patient. Independently complete professional documentation specific to their internship site requirements, including, but not limited to the following: initial/eligibility reports, data collection, daily treatment and/or weekly progress notes, Individual Educational Plans (IEP), discharge summaries, etc.
  5. Demonstrate familiarity with onsite treatment materials/practices and as appropriate, offer creative & efficacious alternatives.
  6. Demonstrate proficient therapeutic knowledge and intervention, including use of materials, cues and instructions, task modification and reinforcement, relative to specific populations served.
  7. Provide effective group treatment and if appropriate, transdisciplinary sessions according to best practices and specific client needs.
  8. Engage in accurate self-evaluation and appropriately respond to site supervisor’s feedback. Manage efficiently and flexibly all aspects (e.g., scheduling, designing home programs, participation in consultative activities, etc.) of the assigned caseload, demonstrating appropriate professional conduct, sensitivity, responsiveness and interpersonal interactions with colleagues, other staff, and family members.
  9. Work collaboratively with other professionals, paraprofessionals as well as family members in accordance with best practices.
  10. Adhere to the ASHA Code of Ethics with special attention to privacy regulations, appropriate referrals, and cultural diversity issues.
