MUS 218 - Keyboard Musicianship III


Units: 1
Group instruction in piano for music majors. Emphasis on reading from staff notation, technique, keyboard harmony, improvisation, and repertoire.

Prerequisites: MUS 112, MUS 116, MUS 119.
Equivalent Quarter Course: MUS 2312.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Perform select major and minor scales with standard fingering
  2. Perform chord progressions in multiple keys
  3. Perform multiple chord types and their inversions
  4. Harmonize simple melodies using diatonic chords
  5. Transpose simple melodies with accompaniment
  6. Develop sight-reading abilities in grand staff (treble + bass clefs)
  7. Prepare repertoire for public performance 
  8. Improvise appropriately leveled patterns
  9. Read transposing instruments and in C-clefs
  10. Perform choral open scores
  11. Perform instrumental and vocal accompaniments with peers
