EPSY 642 - Grief, Trauma, and Crisis Counseling


Units: 2
The unique problems and situations of people facing loss, grief, and bereavement. Emotional reactions to death and loss. Counseling strategies based on stress reduction and the development of positive resolutions.

Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Identify and process personal experiences and beliefs related to grief, loss, trauma, and crisis through written introspective analysis and in-depth discussions.
  2. Differentiate between various models and stages/phases of grief and loss and identify normal and complicated grief reactions through readings, in-depth discussions and personal written analysis.
  3. Differentiate between various models of trauma and crisis counseling models.
  4. Appraise the different characteristics of child and adult grief and demonstrate abilities for working with grieving children through presentation of activities.
  5. Assess family and cultural factors related to grief and loss through readings, in depth-discussions, and written personal analysis.
  6. Analyze concepts related to ambiguous loss and elders through in-depth discussions.
  7. Defend the relevance, application, and effectiveness of narrative approaches to grief and demonstrate ability to conduct narrative conversations related to re-membering practices through in-depth discussions and video analysis.
