SLHS 404 - Child Language Disorders Units: 3 Introduction to the causes and characteristics of primary and secondary language and literacy disorders in children; evidence-based assessment and intervention across settings.
Prerequisites: B.S. Speech Pathology and Audiology major, senior standing, and all of: PSYC 100, SLHS 300, SLHS 301, SLHS 302, SLHS 304, SLHS 305. Equivalent Quarter Course: SPPA 4865. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - List common causes of language and literacy disorders in children
- Observe and label characteristics of developmental language disorders in toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children
- Compare key similarities and differences between the language of a child with primary language impairment and an English language learner
- Outline components of the assessment process in developmental language disorders
- Write a section of a sample assessment report.
- Describe key intervention models and select appropriate intervention strategies for a range of language and literacy disorder profiles, including language-based learning disabilities
- Demonstrate skills in the application of the principles of evidence-based practice in developmental language disorders, including searching for, analyzing and applying available clinical evidence
- List characteristics, assessments and intervention tools specific to autism spectrum disorders.
- List and discuss issues in school-based language intervention, including aligning goals to curriculum and classroom-based intervention
