ENGL 431 - World Mythology

Cosmologies and cosmogonies; creation and destruction myths; heroes and tricksters; theory and its application; oral, visual, and literary works drawn from Europe, North America, Mesoamerica, Egypt, Africa, the Orient, the Near East, and the Mediterranean.

Equivalent Quarter Course: ENGL 4720.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Discuss in general terms how selected myths and literary works exemplify the historical periods and the traditions from which they derive.
Define the principal themes and problems that emerge from studies of representative myths and literary texts, and discuss–in both oral and written formats–the manifestations of those themes and problems within selected works.
Develop the ability to think critically by asking questions about what has been read and/or viewed by recognizing assumptions and implications and by evaluating ideas.
Develop an interest in and a sense of inquiry about oral, visual, and written works.
Demonstrate an ability to identify, find, and use library resources that may further the student’s work both in and beyond ENGL 431.
