TED 470 - Early Childhood Education: Integrated Language & Literacy Development


Units: 3
Curriculum and instruction for language and literacy development in birth to five years old. Focus on cognition, comprehension, vocabulary, concepts about print, phonemic awareness, and writing development, needs of English Language Learners, and family literacy. Field Component.

Equivalent Quarter Course: TED 4070.
Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid Only.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Develop knowledge of the theoretical foundations of language development of children birth to preschool ages, including the development of pre-linguistic skills, semantics, syntax, discourse skills and phonology.
  2. Apply the components of emergent literacy development including concepts about print, vocabulary, phonemic   awareness, cognition and comprehension.
  3. Develop understanding of theoretical and practical underpinnings of programs, methods and materials to foster emergent language and literacy in the classroom and at home.
  4. Apply practices and principles of appropriate instruction and conditions for learning as proposed in the joint statement produced by the International Reading Association (IRA) and the National Association for the Education of the Young Child (NAEYC), National Council for Accreditation of Teachers (NCATE).
