COMM 433 - Discourses of Difference

Units: 4
Students analyze, critique and create forms of spoken, written and visual communication that engage concepts of “difference”. Topics may include gender, race, class, ethnicity, sexual identity, age, ability, and mental health.

Equivalent Quarter Course: COMM 4300 or COMM 4500.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Analyze the ways in which media representation connects to issues of power and privilege;
Explain the influence of media industries’ economic imperatives and working norms on representations of gender, race, class, sexual orientation, and other social categories;
Develop arguments about the construction of identity in and through personal relationships, institutional and political structures, and media culture;
Discuss the construction and maintenance of communities that influence and are influenced by communication using critical/cultural, rhetorical, and/or justice perspectives.
