TED 503 - Equitable Teaching Practices in a Multiple Subject Classroom


Units: 3
Methods for teaching with emergent bilinguals and English learners; methods for working with special education students; teaching for equity and diversity for all students.

Prerequisites: TED 502.
Equivalent Quarter Course: TED 5366.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Managing and organizing a classroom with first- and second-language learners.
  2. Methods to effectively teach diverse students by increasing candidates’ knowledge and understanding of the background experiences, languages, skills and abilities of student populations; and by teaching them to apply appropriate pedagogical practices that provide access to the core curriculum and lead to high achievement for all students.
  3. The use of materials, methods and strategies for English language development that meet state-adopted reading/language arts standards and content standards in each discipline, leading to the rapid acquisition of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English comparable to those of their grade level peers.
  4. How to apply appropriate pedagogical practices that provide access to the core curriculum and lead to high achievement for all students.
  5. How to apply pedagogical practices that foster high expectations for academic performance from all participants in all contexts.
  6. How to recognize students’ specific learning needs, place students in appropriate contexts for learning, assist students to have access to needed resources for learning.
  7. State and federal legal requirements for the placement and instruction of English learners, and ethical obligations for teaching English learners.
  8. Articulate the local and school organizational structures and resources designed to meet the diverse needs of English learners (e.g., typologies, home language literacy, level of English proficiency, cultural backgrounds).
  9. Be able to implement collaborative processes in serving students across the spectrum.
  10. Use a variety of assessment tools in areas of oral language, reading, written expression, and mathematics.
  11. Apply knowledge of various curricula, methods, and standards to enable students to gain academic skills.
  12. Understand the evolving field of special education and legal requirements.
