SCI 308 - Hands-On Science Teaching Units: 1 Direct experience teaching science to visiting elementary and middle school students. Foundational science concepts demonstrated in engaging activities that promote scientific thinking. Emphasis on Crosscutting Concepts underlying and linking the natural sciences as explicated in the Next Generation Science Standards.
Prerequisites: Department consent. Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Explain the concept of structure-function relationships and how these properties apply in different disciplines.
- Explain the key properties of energy and its importance in understanding a variety of scientific phenomena.
- Explain cause and effect connections involved in a variety of scientific processes.
- Explain how a variety of scientific phenomena can be viewed as systems on broadly different scales.
- Design and teach a mini-lesson to illustrate a specific crosscutting concept to peers and visiting participants.
