KIN 489 - Sport, Racism, and Ethnicity


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D; Social Justice
Sport as a cultural site that reproduces and challenges racial and ethnic inequalities and ideologies.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Equivalent Quarter Course: KIN 3735.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. explain how sport contributes to the construction of racial and ethnic identities and social relations.
  2. identify reasons why sport is an important location to better understand and study racism and xenophobia
  3. explain how sport can provide a space for marginalized groups to counter and reject dominant narratives and ideologies about them.
  4. Critically assess how mainstream and sport media perpetuate dominant ideas about race and ethnicity
  5. Demonstrate how race and ethnicity also interact with aspects of social class and gender within sport contexts

  1. analyze how power and social identity affect social outcomes for different cultural and economic groups using methods of social science inquiry and vocabulary appropriate to those methods;
