BIOL 443 - Hematology


Units: 4
Basic morphology, function and composition of human blood fluids and cells, both normal and diseased. Lecture Units: 3; Lab Units: 1

Prerequisites: BIOL 140B and CHEM 112.
Equivalent Quarter Course: BIOL 3430.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the type and function of the cellular components of blood;
  2. Identify how and where the cellular components of blood are produced;
  3. Describe anemia and some of the types that are encountered;
  4. Describe the various leukocyte disorders including leukemias and “preleukemic” disorders;
  5. Explain how hemostasis operates and some of the disorders inherent;
  6. Perform various laboratory techniques and procedures performed in a hematology laboratory;
  7. Prepare, stain, and perform microscopic examinations of blood films.
