GEOL 361 - Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology

Characteristics, phase relations, and origin of igneous and metamorphic rocks. Plate tectonic setting of magmatism and metamorphism. Rock classification based upon hand-lens and microscopic examination of mineralogy and texture. Petrologic study of selected rock suite and written report. Lecture Units: 3; Lab Units: 1.

Prerequisites: GEOL 360.
Equivalent Quarter Course: GEOL 3701.

Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Classify igneous and metamorphic rocks.
Understand and recognize associations between petrogenesis and plate tectonic environment.
Understand field relationships between igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks.
Interpret igneous rock phase diagrams and petrogenesis in terms of current models.
Identify and interpret important minerals and textures in both hand samples and thin sections.
