Overview of public health and policy issues in aging and long term care. Implications of chronic illnesses and disability in the aging population. Impact of economic, political and social conditions in the provision of health care services to the elderly.

Prerequisites: HSC 315.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Understand the demographics and biology of aging, how aging is viewed in society today, and the concept of successful and healthy aging.
Understand the major physical, mental and psychosocial health problems in the elderly population.
Describe models of assessment, prevention, intervention and evaluation that are relevant to diagnosis and treatment of major physical, mental and psychosocial health problems in the elderly population.
Discuss the relationship between civic engagement, social inclusion, and multiple dimensions of health among older individuals.
Recognize the changing role of family relationships in the provision of health care services to the elderly.
Describe the evolution of long term care, various models of care, including financing and reimbursement of long term care programs.
Recognize the impact of race, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, and other differences, on the physical, mental and emotional health of older adults.
Understand issues surrounding ethical decision making among older adults.
