MUS 601A - Analysis of Musical Styles I


Units: 3
Analysis of compositional styles from chant to present-day music. Compositional principles are derived from the music with results then generalized according to composer and period.

Prerequisites: M.A. Music major.
Equivalent Quarter Course: MUS 6015.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Actively participate in seminar discussions focused on important and relevant issues in the analysis of music.
  2. Address complex and challenging questions related to music theory and musical analysis through the application of critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and research methodology.
  3. Communicate your findings clearly and persuasively through both written and verbal means.
  4. Work cooperatively and respectfully with classmates on classroom, research, and presentation projects.
