ENGL 602 - Graduate Workshop in Fiction

Writing of long and short fiction. Theory and analysis of the art of fiction. For the prospective professional writer.

Prerequisites: Post-baccalaureate standing.
Equivalent Quarter Course: ENGL 6070.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

A better writer through the practice of her/his craft and sustained criticism incorporated into her/his work in revision.
A more attentive reader of fiction through in-depth analysis of both student work and published work by professional writers.
Conversant with contemporary literary trends through exposure to recent fiction in all its variegated forms.
Able to critique in depth a work-in-progress (a manuscript in draft) through close examination of student work with the goal of offering pointed criticism for revision.
Closer to publication through familiarity with appropriate magazines and markets discussed in class, and refinement gained in class.
Possessed of a realistic sense of the maturity, strength and overall level of her/his artistic/literary ability at this time.
