ENGL 652 - Phonology, Morphology and Lexical Semantics


Units: 4
Investigation of English phonetics and phonology as well as the structural composition of English words, with emphasis on processes of word formation and theories of meaning and meaning change. Analysis of errors made by ESL learners.

Prerequisites: Post-baccalaureate standing.
Equivalent Quarter Course: ENGL 6504.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Understand the roles and functions of morphology and semantics in the study of human languages.
  2. Understand the relationship between morphology, semantics, phonetics, phonology, and syntax.
  3. Able to do morphological and semantic analysis of words in English and other languages.
  4. Able to use morphological process and rules to understand and discover ways of creating new words.
  5. Relate morphological and semantic theories to teaching English vocabulary to ESL learners.
