ART 341 - Advanced Photography and Social Justice


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: Social Justice
Photography since its invention has been used to address social injustice. In this class students will learn advanced photography, visual communication, documentary and fine art skills, which will be used in social justice projects. Lecture Units: 2; Activity Units: 1.

Prerequisites: ART 101.
Repeatability: May be repeated for credit for a maximum of 6 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid Only.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Use photography to communicate and challenge social injustice;
  2. Make images about social injustice using both documentary and fine art techniques;
  3. Use photography for visual communication and storytelling;
  4. Analyze the composition of photographs, analyze color, light and shadow, and how these contribute to a photograph’s meanings;
  5. Understand that photographs have both denotative meanings and connotative meanings;
  6. Contextualize photographs not merely as reflections of reality, but also as mediated images that convey many meanings;
  7. Apply photography as part of a service-learning project;
  8. Use advanced photographic techniques to achieve good photographs in challenging situations.


Social Justice Overlay Learning Outcomes
  1. use a disciplinary perspective to analyze issues of social justice and equity;
  2. describe the challenges to achieving social justice; and
  3. identify ways in which individuals and/or groups can contribute to social justice within local communities, nations, or the world.
