SOC 433 - Community Engagement


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: Social Justice
Builds and promotes community engagement in non-profit community-based organizations. Probes and examines the dynamics of community service, volunteering, and service-based careers. This course includes volunteering in a Bay Area community based organization.

Equivalent Quarter Course: SOC 3614.
Possible Instructional Methods: Hybrid Only.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Communication. Through the weekly class reflection and the written assignments, students will be able to effectively communicate and engage in educated, open-minded discussions of diverse sociocultural beliefs, perspectives, and norms.
  2. Diversity.  Through engagement in diverse community-based organizations, CSUEB students will be able to embrace social diversity, critically analyze cultural representations of oppressed populations, and work toward equity and empowerment.
  3. Collaboration with Diverse Groups. Through their community engagement, students will work collaboratively in diverse groups and successfully complete a community service practicum.
  4. Integration and Synthesis of Sociological Knowledge.  Through the weekly reflections and course assignments, students will critically read, interpret, integrate, and synthesize abstract sociological arguments, theories, and practice methods.


Social Justice Overlay Learning Outcomes
  1. use a disciplinary perspective to analyze issues of social justice and equity;
  2. describe the challenges to achieving social justice; and
  3. identify ways in which individuals and/or groups can contribute to social justice within local communities, nations, or the world.
