ART 245 - Motion Graphics I


Units: 3
Introductory to intermediate level computer-based motion graphics. Analysis and application of animation and design principles in assignments and projects.

Prerequisites: All of: ART 100, ART 101, ART 102, ART 103, ART 104.
Co-requisites: ART 241.
Equivalent Quarter Course: ART 3825.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. On completion of this course, students will be able to: Develop a message that evolves over time by manipulating
  2. formal elements in a motion graphic animation; 2. Develop a message that evolves over time by manipulating the grammar of motion in a motion graphic animation;
  3. Use principles of typography and kinetic typography to create a motion graphic animation whose text supports the message and is legible in a specified medium;
  4. Develop a message that evolves over time and derives its meaning from the coordination of different layers such as, type, graphics, audio and still and/or moving images;
  5. Use a motion graphics software application to composite and animate text, graphics, moving images, and sound, and output the animation in the appropriate format for a specified medium;
  6. Manipulate objects, such as text, lights, and cameras, within 3D space to produce a specified effect;
  7. Apply project development and pre-production skills to the creation of motion graphics;
  8. Create original motion graphics for a variety of applications including film, television, websites, and public spaces such as, immersive environments, animated exteriors, digital signage, performance spaces, and augmented or virtual realities;
  9. Critically analyze their own work, as well as examples of motion graphics from the larger media culture;
  10. Refine their own work based on critical feedback and self-evaluation;
  11. Understand the role of motion graphics as a medium within both historical and contemporary art practices.
