ART 244 - Animation I


Units: 3
Production of introductory to intermediate level computer-based animation with emphasis on drawn and stop-motion techniques used for storytelling and creative communication. Analyze and apply animation principles in assignments and projects using both digital and non-digital media.

Prerequisites: All of: ART 100, ART 101, ART 102, ART 103, ART 104.
Co-requisites: ART 241.
Equivalent Quarter Course: ART 3800.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate and utilize the formal elements and organizing principles of animation art including action/movement(anticipation, follow through, squash & stretch, easing, timing, cycles) extremes, tweening, sequence, narrative, shot composition, editing, and sound;
  2. Improve media skills relevant to animation (camera operation, character & set design/making, lighting, sound recording and editing, creative writing, scriptwriting, storyboarding);
  3. Apply project development and pre-production skills to the creation of animation;
  4. Create original animated artworks using stop-motion and drawing based animation methods;
  5. Critically analyze their own work, as well as examples of animation from the larger media culture;
  6. Refine their own work based on critical feedback and self-evaluation;
  7. Understand the role of animation as a medium within both historical and contemporary art practices;
  8. Collaborate with peers in the development and execution of animations.
