HDEV 442 - Health and Aging

This course presents an interdisciplinary approach to understand the factors that contribute to health outcomes in older adulthood. Focus ranges from global public health to personal narrative.

Prerequisites: Junior, senior or post-baccalaureate standing.
Equivalent Quarter Course: HDEV 4362 or HDEV 4363.
Possible Instructional Methods: Entirely On-ground, or Entirely Online, or Hybrid.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Identify the major physiological, medical and cognitive changes associated with normal and pathological aging (SLO1).
Understand the influences of diversity such as race, class and gender on diverse health outcomes such as disability, life expectancy and quality of life (SLO1, SLO4, and likely SLO5 as well) .
Appreciate the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary nature of aging and related ethical issues as well as recognizing the global yet personal scope of aging (SLO2, SLO4, likely SLO5).
Carry out library-based research, design an intervention program (with a group) and complete a life story or other empirical project (SLO1, SLO3).
