Graduation Requirement in Writing Proficiency

All students must demonstrate competency in writing skills as a requirement for graduation. Information on currently available ways to meet the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) and the University Writing Skills Requirement (UWSR) may be obtained from Academic Programs and Services.  

Cal State East Bay has temporarily suspended the University Writing Skills Requirement (UWSR) through Academic Year 2022-23.  Students with rights to the 2022-23 Catalog for graduation requirements are considered to have satisfied this requirement.

Note: Some graduate programs (e.g., M.A. Music, M.B.A., M.S. Educational Leadership) require coursework which also fulfills the UWSR.  Students pursing these degrees must complete the courses required by their programs in order to earn a degree.
