Selective Service

The federal Military Selective Service Act (the “Act”) requires most males residing in the United States to present themselves for registration with the Selective Service System within thirty days of their eighteenth birthday. Most males between the ages of 18 and 25 must be registered.

Selective Service registration forms are available at any U.S. Post Office, and many high schools have a staff member or teacher appointed as a Selective Service Registrar. Veteran Student Services

Veteran Student Services (VSS) provides wraparound student support services to all Cal State East Bay veteran students. Program services are organized around three key areas:

1. One-on-one holistic academic counseling for veterans that includes academic advising, career & goal planning, scholarship guidance, graduate school advising, and guidance on balancing academic and personal life.
2. Benefits advising for veterans, reservists, and dependents of veterans on completing and filing V.A. claim forms for federal and state education assistance programs, including assistance with special procedures for veterans’ priority registration and dependents’ CalVet College Fee Waiver program.
3. Developing and implementing student programs, both social and educational, recognizing the needs and interests of our veteran student population.  This includes Veteran Peer Leaders.

Veteran’s Admission

Veterans who meet the admission requirements may attend under full veterans’ benefits. Information concerning veterans’ programs is outlined at www.csueastbay.edu/veterans.

First-time freshmen and lower division applicants who are California resident veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, but who do not meet regular entrance requirements may be considered for undergraduate admission if, in the university’s judgment, the veteran has the potential to perform satisfactorily at the collegiate level. 

If an applicant wishes to be considered under this provision, the application for admission must include supporting documents, including separation papers (DD 214), and a letter petitioning special consideration. Transcripts and/or test scores are also required.

Dependents of Veterans

Full-time undergraduate enrollment for dependents of disabled or deceased veterans (under Chapter 33 or 35) is 12 or more semester units, according to V.A. regulations. Because graduate level programs vary in the amount of credits required for full-time training, the school provides the training time information to V.A. in addition to the term dates and credit hours of the enrollment. For special sessions that are shorter than standard terms (i.e., Winter and Summer), V.A. calculates weighted “equivalent credit hours” so that fewer credits are required for full-time (and more than half-time) training. To confirm the payment rate once enrollment is certified, students may contact the V.A. Education Center at 888-442-4551.

Each semester, dependents of veterans who are eligible to use VA Education Benefits must complete the Veterans Educational Benefits Certification Request (VEBCR) form in MyCSUEB. Please refer to the How-To Guide for instructions on submitting certification requests on our VSS website.

Note: Undergraduate and graduate students who apply for benefits as dependents of disabled or deceased veterans, must be enrolled in courses that apply to a definite program (baccalaureate or master’s degree and/or credential).

Credit for Military Training and USAFI

Cal State East Bay grants six (6) semester units of credit toward a baccalaureate degree for a student who completed basic training in military service of the United States, in accordance with the recommendation of the American Council on Education.  Three (3) of these units may be applied toward General Education Area E.

Note: Credit is not given for completion of the six month reserve training programs.

Commissioned officers may receive an additional six (6) semester units, which may be considered upper division elective credit. In order to receive such credit applicants must present written certification from a recognized military authority, such as papers from a military separation center (service form DD-214 or DD-295) or a Joint Services Transcript (JST). Credit for specific courses may be allowed if the student has satisfactorily completed equivalent study in a military service school. The guidelines of the American Council on Education are followed in determining eligibility.

Credit for Non-Collegiate Instruction

Cal State East Bay grants undergraduate degree credit for successful completion of non-collegiate instruction, either military or civilian, appropriate to the baccalaureate degree, which has been recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide, ACE National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training and/or National College Credit Recommendation Service. The numbers of units allowed are those recommended in the ACE Military Guide and/or the ACE National Guide to Educational Credit for Workforce Training. Please consult the appropriate academic advisor or graduate coordinator for further assistance. 

Note: Lower division, occupational courses designed to train technicians are not acceptable for university credit. Credit granted for non-collegiate instruction is not generally applied to general education or major requirements. In the event that general education credit is granted, credit is limited to 3 units in Area E.  Credit granted outside of general education is limited to 3 units.  Therefore, the maximum amount of credit is 6 units overall.
